Salicylic Acid (Beta-Hydroxy Acid)
Salicylic acid is also widely used in the prevention and treatment of acne through daily application and peels. Sometimes combined with Glycolic acid, salicylic acid in concentrations of 2-6% is a thoroughly effective treatment of facial and body acne as a wash. In higher concentrations of 12-40%, salicylic acid is used to thin areas of thick skin such as callosities, warts, and skin thickening on the feet. Salicylic acid peels are often done alone for a superficial effect, and in combination with Lactic acid, for deeper peels. If overused, salicylate toxicity may be seen; salicylic acid should be avoided in childhood, pregnancy, and breast-feeding if intended to be applied to large areas of the body.
