Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris

Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris (PRP) is a condition with no known etiology. It is a condition where a scaling, rough, salmon-colored eruption begins on the face or neck, and progressed downward to the rest of the body. Classically, there are normal areas of skin "spared" by the eruption. Also, thickening or scaling of the palms and soles may occur, as well as bumps on the elbows and knees.

The treatment of pityriasis rubra pilaris is difficult. Topical steroids and moisturizers are often employed with variable results. Oral retinoids are often used by experienced dermatologists. Sun exposure or UV light therapy is generally avoided.
