Nummular Eczema

This condition commonly presents as intensely itchy coin-shaped plaques on the legs of older men, but can occur in anyone. Most often seen in winter months, this condition may initially present with small vesicles and scaling that later form their characteristic coin-shaped appearance.

Nummular eczema is chronic and episodic in nature. It is not contagious or transmissible. While it may remain localized on the lower legs, it is very possible that it may spread to different areas of the body. It may be very difficult to control even with the strongest medications. The most common treatments include potent topical steroids, steroid injections, topical coal tar preparations, and light therapy. If infection is present and driving the process, oral and topical antibiotics may prove to be very helpful. Extensive moisturizing is a good practice, especially during winter months.

Suggested moisturizers include (try to get the cream over lotions):

Aveeno

Cetaphil cream

Cerave cream

Eucerin cream

Aquaphor
