5-Fluorouracil / Efudex®
5-Fluorouracil (Efudex®) is a cream used to treat actinic keratoses and some squamous cell carcinomas. This cream is routinely applied to the areas affected by actinic keratoses twice daily for three weeks, or as spot treatment to a single actinic keratosis twice daily for three weeks, or twice daily on Saturday and Sunday for 12 weeks. The treatment regimen for squamous cell carcinomas differs than that of actinic keratoses. The specific treatment regimen is determined by both the physician and the patient through mutual cooperation.
5-Fluorouracil functions as a chemotherapeutic agent to destroy abnormally replicating cells as those found in actinic keratoses. Extreme redness, irritation, and occasional pain is expected during the coarse of therapy. However, excess tenderness, swelling, pus, smell, or drainage is not expected and may indicate superficial infection; any such occurrences should be discussed with your dermatologist immediately.
