Sunscreen Agents

The SPF (Sun Protective Factor) is a number that indicates a degree of protection based on how much sun is needed to produce redness in an individual under ideal application use. At least a 15 SPF is recommended for the face and neck, while an SPF 30 or greater is recommended for the body. The sunscreen should be layered onto the skin at least 3 times daily.

Sunscreen agents come in three varieties: chemical UVA blockers, chemical UVB blockers, and physical blockers. Chemical blockers absorb and deactivate the harmful UVA/UVB rays. Physical blockers reflect the sun rays and involve no chemical reaction. Below are the main ingredients that are found in sunscreens:

Chemical UVA blockers:

Avobenzone (Parsol 1789)
Dioxybenzone
Sulsisobenzone

Chemical UVB blockers:

PABA (Para-aminobenzoic acid)
Padmate A
Padmate O
Octyl methoxycinnamate
Octyl salicylate
Trolamine salicylate
Methyl anthralinate

Physical Blockers:

Titanium Dioxide
Zinc Oxide

Mexoryl is a non-FDA approved agent that provides excellent UVA protection that has been used in European countries for over a decade. Some would consider this the ideal UVA blocker.
