Hydroquinone
Widely used throughout dermatology for many years, this compound is effective in treating skin darkening due to melasma, previous inflammation, and sun-induced dark spots. Many over-the-counter compounds contain hydroquinone in concentrations of 2% or less. Prescription preparations typically range from concentrations of 4-6% with some mixtures up to 10 or 20%. Most apply these compounds twice a day until the desired lightness is achieved. The effect is enhanced with the application of a retinoid. A rare side effect of hydroquinone application is paradoxical darkening of the skin.
