Moisturizer
- replaces lipids and oils meant to protect the top layers of the skin; ideally used after a cleanser
- two main types: occlusive moisturizers and humectants
- occlusive moisturizers trap water in the surface layer of skin and prevent evaporation; these are excellent for use after bathing
- body washes combine cleanser and moisturizer functions
- examples include products containing petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, soybean oil, lanolin alcohol, propylene glycol, stearyl stearate, and lecithin
- humectants attract moisture into the skin
- examples include products containing glycerin, lactate, gelatin, hyaluronic acid, and sorbitol
