Perioral Dermatitis

This condition typically occurs in young and middle-aged women and is characterized by redness, scaling, with or without papules, in the area surrounding the lips. The cause is unknown, but some researchers have tried making a link between this condition and some ingredients in toothpaste. Typically, there is an unaffected area immediately around the mouth. The lesions may also spread into the area surrounding the nostrils or even between the eyebrows and forehead. Common complaints include burning, itching, scaling, and redness, in the affected areas.

While this is a chronic condition in many cases, perioral dermatitis may spontaneously resolve with treatment and may recur at times. Sometimes misdiagnosed, if this condition is treated with fluorinated topical steroids, the condition may appear to improve only to recur worse. Current management options include metronidazole gel or lotion twice daily, tetracycline / minocycline / doxycycline once or twice daily, or pimecrolimus (Elidel®) / tacrolimus (Protopic®) twice daily.
