Seborrheic Keratoses

Seborrheic keratoses are extremely common growths appearing in persons over the age of 30. These are warty-appearing, stuck-on, dry or scaling growths that may appear on the face, body, or extremities. Occasionally, these growths become quite dry, and may subsequently become itchy or irritated. With irritation and scratching, these lesions may fall off or get scratched off.

Seborrheic keratoses are not premalignant and do not change into cancers. However, separate cancers, including melanoma, may arise within or adjacent to a seborrheic keratosis. Also, melanomas and squamous cell cancers often appear as seborrheic keratoses and are misdiagnosed as such. It is extremely important to discuss any questionable growth with your dermatologist or personal physician.

The treatment of actual seborrheic keratoses is mainly cosmetic in nature. Dry or scaling lesions that lead to itching may be treated with a moisturizer several times daily. Irritated, painful, or excessively itchy lesions can be easily treated with liquid nitrogen by your dermatologist. Other described methods of treatment include curettage or laser therapy.
