Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure where the very top layers of the skin are removed to reveal a healthy, more glowing skin appearance. This procedure is designed to remove the stratum corneum and portions of the stratum granulosum of the epidermis, but does not induce bleeding since it does not get into any portion of the dermis.

Microdermabrasion is used widely to provide a rejuvenated appearance to the facial skin, prevent acne, and reduce pore size over time. The two primary methods of microdermabrasion include the use of a diamond fraise mechanical rotary system to abrade the skin surface, or the use of crystals blown onto and then vacuumed from the surface of the skin to cause microscopic abrasions. The skin is then left with a shiny, clean appearance. Post-operatively, the skin should be cleansed with a gentle cleanser and sun avoidance should be strictly practiced for 2 days after the procedure to prevent darkening of the treated skin.

Both methods have a slight discomfort but does not require the need for topical anesthesia. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes and is usually repeated once or twice a week.
