Basic Skin Care Regimen

A solid basic skin care regimen includes 3 main components: a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. The choice of cleanser should be dictated by the underlying characteristics of the skin oily or acne prone skin may benefit most from glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide cleansers. Drier skin may benefit from more pH-balanced, gentler cleansers. A cleanser should be applied 2-3 times a day.

The choice of a moisturizer should ideally be one that is non-greasy, easily applied under makeup, and non-comedogenic (does not form acne). Creams and lotions are easily the number one choices for both face and body for many people. For those that are quite dry on the body, an ointment may be a wise choice for quicker hydration. Moisturizers should be applied 2-3 times a day.

Sunscreens are an essential component of both basic and advanced skin care regimens. An SPF of 15 or higher is recommended for daily facial use and should be applied 2-3 times (or more) per day. A higher SPF is recommended if direct sun exposure for prolonged periods of time is expected (e.g. sailing, going to the beach, gardening). This will help prevent the freckling, redness, and wrinkling seen with sun-induced photoaging. A sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher should be used on the body 2-3 times per day. Either chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens, or mixtures of both, are adequate for daily use, although physical sunscreens tend to be thicker, whiter, and less-concealable in daily use. Physical sunscreens are ideal, however, for periods of direct sun exposure for prolonged periods of time. Use of a non-comedogenic sunscreen is recommended.
