Advanced Skin Care Regimen
An advanced skin care regimen includes a cleanser +/- astringent, moisturizer, sunscreen, preventative retinoid compound, and an optional eye care compound. Please see the Basic Skin Care Regimen for the discussion of cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen use.
The addition of an astringent is particularly useful for patients with oily or acne-prone skin. Used after a cleanser, users should be careful not to overuse these products for fear of excessive drying or irritation. While a cleanser is used 2-3 times per day, an astringent should be used twice daily, ideally in the morning and at night after cleanser use.
Preventative retinoids may be applied in prescription or non-prescription strength once a day, usually at night. The ability of these compounds to prevent aging and enhance skin tightness has been scientifically studied and should be a part of any advanced skin care regimen.
Eye care compounds may include a variety of ingredients including antioxidants such as vitamin C, Vitamin E, Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, and/or retinoids. These compounds come in a variety of creams, gels, lotions, and firming serums. Used faithfully for 2-3 months, a reduction of crow's feet wrinkles and induction of softer, tighter skin may be seen. Some may also contain sunscreen components, thereby adding an extra layer of sun-protection for this all-important region.
