Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid is an Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) used in chemical peels because of its ability to remove the very top layers of the skin and create a clean, fresh look to the skin. While used in many preparations as a primary and secondary agent for acne, Glycolic acid is effective in reducing skin pigmentation through this "peel effect". Used for many years in the treatment of melasma, Glycolic acid may be combined with hydroquinone and retinoids to enhance the skin lightening effect. Most over-the-counter preparations range from 8-12% glycolic acid concentration. Physician office peels can range from 20-70%.
