Hand Dermatitis
Hand dermatitis is a chronic, irritating condition where the hands present with diffuse or focal scaling, redness, burning, or fissuring. The most common causes of hand dermatitis are allergic contact dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis, but other causes include scabies, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, among others.
Hand dermatitis is often disabling as many people perform their occupations with primary use of their hands. It is very important to recognize anything at home or at work that may cause or worsen the eczema. Often, the causal agent may be cleaners, chemicals, new gloves or rubber products, or products used in hobbies. Identifying the agent is commonly very difficult and may be done in coordination with your dermatologist.
Treatment of hand dermatitis often requires the use of topical and oral steroids in addition to moisturizers. Suggested moisturizers include:
Aquaphor
Neutrogena Norwegian Hand Cream
Theraseal
Carmol/Urea Creams (prescription)
Apply any of these suggested moisturizers 3-4 times daily.
Allergic patch testing may also be performed by your dermatologist in order to find the cause of your dermatitis if persistent and the source remains unknown. If fissuring occurs, self-applied superglue may be used to seal the fissure, or other special treatments may be undertaken by your dermatologist.
