Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are divided into 3 main groups: superficial peels, medium-depth peels, and deep peels. Each type of peel has its own specific uses and the general idea of each peel is presented below:

    Superficial Peel:

  • Used for acne, hyperpigmentation, melasma, skin-refreshing
  • Peels the very top layers of the skin
  • Includes glycolic acid peels, salicylic acid peels, TCA peels

    Deep Peel:

  • Used to treat fine and deeper wrinkles
  • Peels the top and more of the middle layer of skin
  • Includes phenol peels

Prior to superficial and medium-depth peels, the skin is cleaned with either acetone or isopropyl alcohol. The superficial peel is applied for 2-3 minutes, and then washed off. Redness and irritation may be expected for 1 or 2 days with a superficial peel. Medium depth peels have irritation that my last for 4-7 days. Application of icepacks and antibiotic ointment may help healing and comfort after these peels.
